Undertaking Structural Underpinning Works For A Neighbouring Building Within The Tower Of London Grounds For Historic Royal Palaces, We Provided Ground Screw Technology To Offer Robust Support To Existing Foundations, Complemented By A New RC Beam With A Pile Concrete Cap In A Challenging-To-Reach Basement.

The challenge

The project presented unique hurdles due to restricted access and stringent load requirements, as outlined in the structural calculations. Our client encountered limitations, as conventional foundation excavation and spoil extraction wouldn’t be feasible.

The solution

Following a thorough site investigation and compression load testing – in collaboration with our third-party engineering partners and our client’s consultancy – we specified and installed 37 extendable hot dip galvanised ground screws measuring 89mm x 2300mm. This allowed us to reach the design verification load in a confined space with extremely limited access.

To address the challenges of transporting fixed-length Ground Screws with a 2.3m requirement into the basement, we opted for a flexible, extendable system, utilising smaller sections, proved instrumental in delivering an effective solution.
