It’s the kind of environment where every foundation decision has to account for what’s living in and around the soil. The Trust needed new signage installed across the reserve – including welcome boards, visitor information panels, and wayfinding posts – but the method of installing them mattered just as much as the signs themselves.Concrete was ruled out entirely. Pouring concrete in a nature reserve introduces contaminants into the ground, risks disrupting root systems and habitats, and leaves a permanent scar if the signage ever needs to be moved or replaced. Directly embedding the posts – where timber posts are simply sunk into the ground and backfilled – inevitably leads to rot at the soil line, shortening the signage’s lifespan.For a site dedicated to protecting and restoring the natural world, concrete here is a non-starter.Winnall Moor in WinchesterThe solutionOur open-top ground screws were the ideal choice here. The open-top design allows timber posts to be dropped directly into the screw head and secured in place, creating a clean and sturdy connection without the need for additional brackets or complex fixings. It’s a straightforward system that suits signage installations perfectly.Installation was quick and clean. Each ground screw was driven into position without any excavation, meaning no soil was removed and no spoil needed to be disposed of. The surrounding vegetation and root systems were left undisturbed.Quick, clean installationNature reserves present a unique set of considerations that most sites don’t. There are no skips, no concrete mixers, and no room for heavy machinery tearing up soft ground. The installation had to be low-impact in every sense.Ground screws tick every box. There’s no digging, no waste, and no chemical contaminants entering the soil. And if the Trust ever needs to reposition or replace a sign, the ground screws can be removed cleanly without leaving a trace – something that’s impossible with concrete.The resultsThe resulting signs are clean, securely affixed, and will remain long-lasting regardless of what the elements throw at them.The ground screws are invisible and are stronger, less disruptive, and resistant to rot, unlike concrete bases or directly burying the postsThis isn’t the first time we’ve worked with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, and projects like this are a reminder of why they keep coming back.
